Systematic walkover surface survey and collection of artifacts was conducted in late 2002 and early 2003, covering approximately 26 acres of the 42 acres platted for the town site. This pedestrian survey yielded over 6,000 historic-period artifacts, all mapped with a total station. Note the concentrations in distribution shown above. Based on such evidence of likely preservation of the archaeological record, an application was submitted in late 2003 for an NSF-REU grant, which was approved in December 2003.
