I first learned about alternate tunings when I went to college, the “dropped D” of many classical pieces (where the low E is tuned down a whole step) and eventually the amusingly euphonious tuning known as DADGAD. My friend and roommate Marc was a big fan of the French guitarist Pierre Bensusan, who uses DADGAD all the time, so years later when I got a steel string guitar, I tuned it up Bensusan style. I played a D major chord—and whoa! What came out was a strange minor chord! I played around with all kinds of chords and shapes and figures I was used to, came up with a few transitions, and this little piece was born. In honor of Bensusan (who’s coming up directly), I’ve picked a fairly New Age title for it. But call it whatever you like.
