Falling Leaves
I try to include one original composition on each of these, and here it is. On the rare occasions where I am inspired to write something, it’s almost always when I’m in an alternate tuning and this piece is no exception. After practicing Qualey’s “Santa Cruz,” which is in drop-D but capo’d at the second fret, I would explore what various chord shapes sounded like in the new tuning, and this is what came out. I tried for an overall looser feel that doesn’t simply vary the melody based on a pre-existing rhythmic pattern, and so while there’s some of the usual melody on top of arpeggio, there’s also some chord strumming and some tempo changes.
The feeling here is a bit melancholy, and the sound is autumnal, so “falling leaves.”
