Interactive Hierakonpolis and Extra Credit
The Archaeological Institute of America presents an online, interactive dig tracking the multi-year excavations at Hierakonpolis, Egypt, available at: http://www.archaeology.org/interactive/hierakonpolis/index.html.
Five final grade points of extra credit can be earned by engaging with the challenges faced by the archaeologists and conservators working over the years on the Hierakonpolis project. To receive these credits, compose a five-page, double-spaced essay. These five extra credit points are separate and independent of the five points of extra credit you can earn by writing essays about an archaeology talk or a museum exhibit.
Start your essay by describing the characteristics and significance of the "Fort" or "Enclosure" of Khasekhemwy at Hierakonpolis, as presented in their interactive web site at https://interactive.archaeology.org/hierakonpolis/field/forta.html.
Next, describe the challenges that the archaeology and conservation team faced in preserving the remains of the Enclosure. For example, what motivations led to the use of new mud bricks to restore portions of the structure, rather than employing the original bricks that had fallen onto the ground?
Your essay should be no more than five typed pages, double-spaced, with one-inch margins, 12-point font, and proofread. Submit your extra credit paper by email to Emma Verstraete by 11:50am on Dec. 8, 2021.
