This project addresses phonological patterns, sound change, and typological patterns in language from an aerodynamic perspective.
Speech aerodynamics pertains to the properties of air as it passes through the vocal tract. While relatively understudied, aerodynamics is fundamental to the production of speech.
The phonological, diachronic, and typological predictions of an aerodynamically-based phonology have not been fully explored. The proposed research will contribute to linguistic and clinical phonetics, phonology, and historical linguistics. Moreover, it will enhance theories of language grounded in functional principles.
Speech sounds will be studied and described in aerodynamic terms, with emphasis on major classes of sounds like fricatives, nasals, ejectives, and implosives.
