Practice reading words drawn from the front matter and first ten pages of the 1869 Deseret Alphabet Book of Mormon. Each quiz includes five easy, three moderate, and two difficult words. You can unlock a special bonus round by getting them all right!
Write each word in ordinary English spelling. Match the capitalization of the Deseret item: an initial capital requires an initial capital in your answer, and lowercase items require lowercase answers. There are no all-capital items in the quiz.
Each correct answer earns one point. Spelling and capitalization both count; spaces before or after your answer do not. Where the same Deseret spelling represents more than one English word, alternatives should be accepted. Submit all ten answers to receive your score and corrections. A perfect 10/10 on your first submission unlocks a bonus round: three new Book of Mormon proper names, scored separately out of three. Correcting missed words in practice does not unlock the bonus round.
Easy words are short and familiar. Moderate words involve longer sound sequences or familiar names. Difficult words include long words, archaic forms, and less transparent spellings. For help before you begin, consult the reading guide and character chart.
You may find some spellings unfamiliar or prefer alternatives. The forms used here come directly from the 1869 Book of Mormon, arguably the most sustained effort to standardize Deseret Alphabet spelling. Even so, they reflect one historical approach rather than a universally accepted standard, as you can observe by browsing the Comparative Lexicon.
